congratulations to the translate.org.za team

I learned this morning, via the O’Reilly Radar, that the Translate.org.za team has released localized versions of Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice.org for all 11 official South African languages. I met Dwayne Bailey last year at FOSDEM and was impressed by both the scope and the focus of the Translate.org.za project.

Here’s a quote from Dwayne at the project’s newsletter:

β€œIt is time that South Africans took pride in their mother tongues and worked towards bringing technology into their world as opposed to trying to adapt their world to technology. Mother Tongue Languages Day is an appropriate time to celebrate this – and the Department of Communications, the CSIR and Translate.org.za are doing just that – celebrating our freedom,” says Dwayne (Director of Translate.org.za for new readers).

Congratulations Dwayne and team!
