from firefox add-on to web service

The team at FoxyTunes have launched a music portal. Transbuddha summarizes:

FoxyTunes Planet acts as a music portal that will gather up YouTube, Pandora, Google, Last.FM, and Rhapsody media for the artist, as well as related lyrics, Amazon products, and Flickr photos.

I did a cursory search for Billy Ray Cyrus and here’s the output:

Can’t wait to see how this does. (And I love that last.fm and Hype Machine are both in the aggregated results for searches.) StumbleUpon is the poster child for building a thriving web service on the back of a popular Firefox add-on — it’s great to see another addition to the mix.

Hey Paul, your entry made me look at last.fm, or rather listen. That’s much more fun that I expected, I’m usually worried that “social” networks trim choice down to the least common denominator. last.fm did return intersting stuff, at least for the weird stuff that I was searching for. Good times with Van der Graaf Generator, for exmple, reminded me of university times (my roommate has that record). Stuff I haven’t stumbled upon for ages. And I typed in a few bands of which I wasn’t sure if I should have stuff, Blues Traveller is definitely on.

    Thanks for that.

Check out the last.fm plug-in for iTunes Axel: http://www.last.fm/tools/downloads/. If you have it running while you’re listening to music it will eventually build up a recommendation list for you based on what other people have also listened to who belong to the network.
