Firefox on Campus
Earlier today, we launched Firefox Campus Edition, a bundle of Firefox 2 with add-ons from FoxyTunes, StumbleUpon and Zotero.
For several reasons, I’m really happy about this latest Firefox edition.
Good timing. This is the first time that we’ve coordinated a product release with a seasonal event (the back to school season here in the US). Being in sync helps us gain mainstream press coverage and drive additional exposure for the Campus Edition.
Great partners. FoxyTunes and StumbleUpon are well-known in the Firefox add-ons community. Zotero is a more recent addition but has gotten a bunch of attention and praise for its powerful research tools. Each of these teams rallied over the past several weeks to finalize the Campus Edition and provided software updates that improve the end-user experience. Big thanks to Alex at FoxyTunes, Garrett at StumbleUpon and Dan at Zotero.
Introducing students to Firefox, and to add-ons. We wanted to make it as easy as possible for students who are already using Firefox to point their friends to a version of Firefox that had a useful set of add-ons pre-installed. Being able to play with an initial set of add-ons will showcase some of the cool ways developers are expanding the functionality of Firefox and will encourage students to seek out new add-ons.
Getting the word out on campus. We’ll be following up on our press launch this week with a set of on-campus events, led by Firefox Campus Rep program volunteers. This is an ongoing program we set up last year to provide community members at colleges a way to help spread Firefox at their schools.
In the meantime, I’ve bookmarked some of the initial reviews and mentions for the Campus Edition on del.icio.us. Check them out, and if you’ve got a friend in school who isn’t using Firefox yet, point them to: www.firefox.com/backtoschool!

Firefox user kurtmac blew me away today with his Mozilla Firefox NASCAR set. Check it out for insane virtual racing action, featuring the ‘fox. Via the Firefox feed on Flickr.
Thank You, Mozilla Intern Crew
Our summer interns - all twentysomething of them - here in Mountain View hosted the full-timers tonight for an almost end of summer barbecue at their apartment complex.
The service level was five-star (fligtar iPhone-fu), the menu was cross-platform (beef, turkey and vegetarian), and they were exceedingly careful to remove any electronic devices before throwing guests in the complex’s swimming pool.
Thank you, Mozilla interns, for the hospitality, and, personally, for not picking me for a ritual dunking. Maybe next year. :-)

Via WorldChanging.com:
Now environmental, social change, ethical futurism and sustainability-related sites multiply by the millisecond, meaning constant new additions to the thousands already out there. It can be challenging to keep track of the stand-out newbies while maintaining our frequent visits to trusted veterans.
In the spirit of cutting out the middleman and honoring good work, we thought we’d reveal the top hits from our bookmarks and RSS feeds. Here are some our favorite sources for keeping on top of what’s going on out there — the blogs, forums and online magazines that fuel and inform the work we do here.
My personal blog consumption’s shifted over the past year away from Silicon Valley navel gazing to folks pushing the edges with green marketing, ethical ad planning and sustainability (my core remains Mozillaverse and web industry coverage, as it directly informs our work here at Mozilla).
At any rate - here’s my subscription list; there’s some personal, some industry and some new school blogs as WorldChanging describes.
P.S. As a side note, the UK appears to be leading the charge in green business and marketing for the English-speaking world. I saw this in spades on my last trip to London this past February, where there was a palpable buzz around mobilizing to effect change that will benefit the planet.
P.P.S. If you accessed my subscription list, you’ll need to save the file to your desktop, then follow these instructions to bring the list into Google Reader, Bloglines, and My Yahoo!, to name a few options.
