This aphorism was quoted often at one of the companies I worked at, restated as “Strong opinions, loosely held” and “Argue as if you were right, listen as if you were wrong.” The desired outcome being a culture that valued reasoned debate and ‘evidence-based management’ (this last is another Bob Suttonism).
